May 13, 2023: Mary Harris was born in Ithaca, New York, USA on May 13, 1911 to Italian immigrants, Joseph and Concetta (Delmonte) Petrillose. She married James Richard Harris from North Lexington, North Carolina in August 1937. During their 66 years of marriage, they ran a dry cleaning business and dairy farm in New York. They later retired to Florida, where they spent the last several decades before moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Harris and her husband later moved in to the Alexian Village of Tennessee in 2000, where she resides today. Her husband died in September 2003, aged 90. On her 110th birthday in 2021, Harris has two daughters, five grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren (possibly more). Following the death of Pearlie Williams, Mary Harris became the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Tennessee. At the time of her 112th birthday, she lived in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, USA.

Apr. 25, 2023; Margaret Hollenshead was born as Margaret Berthot on April 22, 1911 in Chanute, Kansas, USA. Her parents were Charles and Lena (née Chandler) Berthot. She had four younger siblings (two sisters, Leona and Mary Alice, and two brothers, Charles and Hugh). As a child, Hollenshead wanted to become a lawyer, but was refused. Instead, she studied music and then taught at different schools in the Chanute area for 35 years. She married Howard Hollenshead and gave birth to three children: Margaret Ann, Hugh and Lynn. The couple lived in Texas, California and Oklahoma before settling back in Kansas in 1947. Howard worked in the oil industry and joined Margaret’s family’s business, Berthot Planing Mill, after returning to Chanute. Howard died on October 31, 1988. Hollenshead’s younger sister, Mary Alice Adell, died in 2011 at the age of 96. Her younger brother, Charles Berthot, died in 2022 at the age of 95. In November 2017, Hollenshead moved to the Country Place Senior Living and Memory Care in Chanute, Kansas, USA. She celebrated her 110th birthday on April 22, 2021. Following the death of 112-year-old Gertrude Stern on April 11, 2022, she became the oldest known living person in Kansas. She passed away in Chanute, Kansas, USA, on April 28, 2023, at the age of 112 years, 6 days.

Aug. 11, 2023; Susie Lewis was born in Moark, Clay County, Arkansas, USA on August 11, 1911, as the daughter of Horace and Helen (née Bell) Jackson. At the time she was nine, Lewis’ father left Arkansas and moved his family to Chicago’s West Side. For a while they lived near Washburn Avenue but kept pushing west, finally settling in Chicago, Illinois, USA, where she would grow up. For a while, she went to the now-closed Medill Elementary School on the Near West Side. At the time, she was the only African American student in her class. She and her husband were married for 52 years. They raised their family on the city’s West Side, working various jobs. Lewis had three children, Rudolph Valentino Booth, Constance Lee Henry and Allen Jerome Lewis. At the time they went to school, the atmosphere at school changed in favour of segregation at classes. In 1963, a coalition of civil rights activists staged the largest school boycott in the city’s history to protest segregated schools and the lack of resources for predominantly African-American schools on the South and West sides. During her lifetime, Lewis has worked on a tractor farm, did housework, helped put together parts in a TV factory and folded clothes at a laundry. Her last job was for the B&O Railroad. She was around 70 years old then. Lewis helped establish the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church on the West Side and served on the usher board there for many years. She joined the Garden of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church of Maywood in 1970 where she holds the title of the oldest member and Mother of the church. Her only daughter, Constance Henry, died in 2005. Lewis had an active lifestyle until she had knee surgery. She used to enjoy bowling and fishing, which she loved especially. She used to go to Wisconsin, and every year she went to Canada.

At the time she was 106, she would make her way to the Garden of Prayer Church in Broadview where she served as a “church mother,” a sacred role in the African-American church tradition that is only attained through spiritual maturity. Faith continued to play an important role in her life. As centenarian she stated: “I stayed close to God all my life, and that’s the best thing I can tell people. No matter what happens, God will always make a way because he brought me through a lot.” In August 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian. She reportedly reads the Bible every day. Lewis attributes her longevity to her strong work ethic and her Christian beliefs. Her diet did not include any dietary restrictions; yet included cat fish, buffalo fish and perch. The secret to a long life she says, is to “trust God.”. At the time of her 112th birthday, Lewis lived in Chicago, Illinois, USA. She is currently the oldest known living person in Illinois.

Fumie Matsuda, 112

May 7, 2023; Fumie Matsuda was born in Japan on March 31, 1911. She celebrated her 110th birthday in March 2021. In September 2022 she was reported as the fourth-oldest living person in Hokkaido Prefecture. As of her 112th birthday in March 2023, Fumie Matsuda lived in Chitose, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.

Mary Gwendoline “Gwen” Moore claims to have been born in Tredegar, Wales, UK on November 27, 1911. However, the study performed by the Gerontology Research Group has proven that her actual date of birth was December 2, 1911. In the late 1960s, she migrated from the UK to Australia. Moore became the oldest known living person in Australia, following the death of 111-year old Ina Reid on May 13, 2022. At the time of her 111th birthday, Moore lived at the Bribie Cove nursing home in Bongaree, Queensland, Australia.
Her sister Lilian Priest (November 7, 1908 – June 6, 2021) who died in Swanage, Dorset, England, UK on June 6, 2021 at the age of 112 years, 211 days, was the oldest living person in the United Kingdom at the time of her death.
Mary Gwendoline Moore, together with her older sister Lilian Priest were/remain:
- the oldest known living pair of siblings in the world.
- one of only five known supercentenarian pair of siblings in recorded history.
- the only siblings who lived to become the Doyennes of two different countries (L. Priest in the UK; M.G. Moore in Australia)

July 12, 2023: Aline Elizabeth Miles was born in Washington, District of Columbia, USA on March 2, 1911 to William and Nellie (née Duckett) Jones. She married Arthur Watson Miles in May 1937. He died in 1989. In March 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday. Miles became the oldest known living woman in the U.S. state of Maryland, following the death of Bessie Harding on February 16, 2022. She later became the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Maryland, following the death of Ezra Hill on October 4, 2022. At the time of her 111th birthday, Miles lived in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, USA at the age of 112 years, 132 days.

Apr. 10, 2023; Lillian Moran was born in Maddock, North Dakota, USA on March 18, 1911 to Jacob and Emma Julia (née Nottestad) Jacobsen. She spent her childhood in Flora She married John Moran in 1940 and they had one son Gary Wayne (1942-2019). Moran grew up on a farm, milking cows and working in the fields. Her father was a farmer and blacksmith. Moran recalls working on threshing crews, and helping out on a cook Car. At the time of her 108th birthday, Moran used a wheelchair but took no prescribed medications. In March 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday. She became the oldest known person living in the U.S. state of Minnesota, following the death of 114-year-old Erna Zahn on August 9, 2022. Moran currently lives in Moorhead, Minnesota, USA. Moran celebrated her 112th birthday in May 2023 because she tested positive for COVID-19 in March. This was the second time Moran had survived COVID-19.

May 10, 2023; Hana Sato was born on May 1, 1911 in Japan. On May 1, 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian. At the time of her 112th birthday, she had one brother aged 96. Sato currently lives in Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan, at the age of 112 years, 102 days.

Apr. 7, 2023; Herlda Senhouse was born in Piedmont, West Virginia, USA on February 28, 1911 to John and Isabella “Belle” (née Saunders) Fairfax. Both of her parents died in her early childhood. Senhouse moved to Woburn, Massachusetts, USA, to an uncle and aunt’s house. In 1931, she became the first in her family to graduate from high school. She was married to William Senhouse who died in January 1998. Later in her life, Senhouse founded what was Boston’s Clique Club, a social club of dancers and musicians to help educate Black students. She helped countless Black students pay for everything from books to college tuition. On her 110th birthday in 2021, Senhouse could recall events from her childhood, including the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic. When asked for her secret to long life, Senhouse said “do your best to resolve issues, but if you can’t fix it, forget it, let it go – that’s how you get through life. Limit the stress.” At the age of 112, Senhouse was still able to walk with the help of a walker.
Herlda Senhouse has been a resident of Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA. At the time of her validation on Apr. 7, 2023, she was the second-oldest known living person in Massachusetts, behind Hazel Plummer.

Mar. 8, 2023; Edna Strickland was born in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, UK, on March 6, 1911. On Mar. 6, 2023, she turned 112. At the time of her 112th birthday, she was a resident of Hounslow, London, England, UK, the oldest known living person in London, and also the third-oldest known living person in the United Kingdom, after Ethel Caterham and Ada Thompson. Following Ada Thompson’s passing in Mar. 2023, Edna Strickland became the second oldest living person in the UK.

July 30, 2023; Mary Florence Walker was born on August 28, 1911 in London, England, UK. On August 28, 2021 she became a supercentenarian. At the time of her validation she lived in Croydon, London, England and was the second-oldest known living person in London, behind Edna Strickland, and the third-oldest known living person in the United Kingdom, behind 113-year old Ethel Caterham and 112-year old Edna Strickland whose age has also been validated by the Gerontology Research Group.
