Together with her husband, she raised eight children. She later moved to Deltona, Florida. She became the oldest known living Ecuadorian-born person, following the death of 113-year-old Dolores Velez Bravo on October 12, 2021. On the day of her validation, Ada Avila was the sixth oldest living person in the USA, as well as third-oldest validated person to have been born in Ecuador, behind Dolores Velez Bravo (1907-2021), and Maria Esther de Capovilla (1889-2006), who was visited in Ecuador by Robert Young himself almost two decades prior.

The case of Ada Avila is a splendid example of the scientific age validation diligence and excellence the Gerontology Research Group can achieve when a fruitful family contact is assured. Then even the greatest difficulties can be overcome, and language and cultural barriers broken in the face of international cooperation at the highest level. Her case was proven by Verdi Avila, Robert Young, and Wacław Jan Kroczek; validated by the Gerontology Research Group on Feb. 27, 2023.

Mar. 23, 2023; Susana Gutierrez Godoy was born in Tepechitlan, Zacatecas state, Mexico, on May 24, 1910. She was born as the second child out of five children. Her mother Francisca Godoy Ortiz (1885–1916) died when she was just six years old, and her father Juan Gutierrez Correa (1887–1983) lived to the age 95. Following her mother’s death, she and her siblings were raised by her aunt. Susana worked from a very young age. Her whole life was dedicated to selling food, menudo (traditional Mexican soup), and dinners in Tepechitlan City. She also loved to drink mezcal. Gutierrez Godoy married her first husband Jose Estrada Meza on April 19, 1932. He died over a year later on December 5, 1933. Susana’s second husband was Pedro Vazquez Parra, and they married on June 8, 1939. The couple had a daughter, who died at the age of three months. After her daughter’s death, Susana was not able to have any more children. One of her brothers died at the age of 32 due to a heart attack, and one of her other brothers, Agustin, lived to the age of 92. Gutierrez Godoy was very independent in her old age. She always cooked for herself until she was around 100. She once also had her own chickens as well. She became the oldest known living person in Mexico, following the death of Angela Diaz Millan on October 19, 2022. After turning 110, Susana Gutierrez Godoy lived in a nursing home in Tepechitlan, Zacatecas state, Mexico.

This validation is an important step forward for Mexico, as Mrs. Gutierrez Godoy becomes the third supercentenarian in the history of Mexico, validated by the international scientific age validation standards, behind 112-year old Ambrosia Acosta Teraz (1904-2016), and 113-year old Antonia Valderrama Ocampo (1907-2020), the latter being considered the longevity record-holder of Mexico.

Her age was verified by independent researchers from Mexico, supported by experienced GRG Correspondents: Messrs Emilio Ibanez (GRG Correspondent for Spain), and Nicolas Ruiz Moreno (GRG Correspondent for Argentina). The initial application was received on June 30, 2020. The validation was concluded posivite on March 23, 2023.

Velma Hinds has been an active member of the Church of God Holiness of Macon and helped teach Sunday school throughout the years. She first started working at the Miami hotel as an elevator operator and then was promoted to a server. She then worked various jobs including housekeeping, a matron at a girl’s dorm in Mount Zion and Kirksville, Missouri and a seamstress at factories, including making Danny Dare and Debbie Dare children jackets in Mission, Kansas. Hinds was a wonderful seamstress and often made beautiful dresses and attire for special occasions. She enjoyed reading, sewing, baking pies, and caring and entertaining for her family, especially her grandchildren.  Reportedly, her secret to longevity is milk, laughter, kindness, more milk, and her love of Jesus. On her 111th birthday in 2021, the Mayor of Macon James “Talt” Holman declared her birthday “Velma Hinds Day”. As of October 2021, she had eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

There has been significant history of longevity in the Hinds’ family: the mother lived to be 99, sister Edith Smith (1901–1995) lived to be 93, Edith’s twin sister Ethel Scoles (1901–2003) lived to be 101, and her brothers: Walter Woods (1915–2017) and Lester Woods (1918-2020) both lived to be 101.

At the time of her 112th birthday, Hinds lived in Macon, Missouri, USA. She lived in the same nursing home as Naomi Curtright, who died in 2019 at the age of 110.

The Gerontology Research Group has established a cordial family contact in order to complete this validation, which for many reasons was challenging; however, is completed in full success. Velma Hinds’s age was verified by Waclaw Jan Kroczek, and Susan Vankeirsbilck, and validated by the GRG as of Apr. 14, 2023.

She also maintained an active schedule at this time, enjoying morning stretch classes, participating in knitting groups, and playing bridge on a weekly basis. Levy smoked for a while when younger and was successfully treated for breast cancer in 1996. She thinks her longevity might stem from the low-cholesterol diet she has followed for 30 years, a positive outlook and, maybe, the one glass of red wine she still downs daily. When asked about her secrets to longevity, she cited a healthy diet, especially yogurt: “I started eating yogurt when I heard that that’s why the Russians live to such a ripe old age because they eat a lot of the yogurt. So I have that for lunch every single day with a fruit and crackers.”

At the time of her 112th birthday, Levy resided at The Osborn, a senior living community in Rye, New York, USA, where she has lived since 1996.
