Biography
Haru Shimazu was born in Nirasaki Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan on 7 July 1892. Her father was a teacher. She was schooled up to junior high. At the age of 19, she married, and would later give birth to six children, all of whom were still alive at the time of her death.
Shimazu worked by sewing kimonos and yukatas, often waking up at 5:00 A.M., until the age of 100. She volunteered to teach sewing in her neighbourhood. At the age of 78, she started living with her son, until the age of 106, when she broke her hip.
Haru Shimazu died in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan on 14 December 2004 at the age of 112 years, 160 days.
