Gwendoline Bertha Phillips was born in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom on July 17, 1903. She never married, and devoted her life to taking care of her parents. She lived with them in a house in Risca Road, Newport, and helped them to buy the property while she worked. Phillips worked as a teacher in primary and secondary schools in Newport (including one in Risca Road). She was a devout Catholic, and was formerly an organist at St Mary’s Church in Stow Hill, Newport. She enjoyed socialising, and played bridge with members of the congregation. Phillips moved to Danygraig Nursing Home in 2009, after suffering a fall. Until the age of 108, she drank a glass of brandy and port every morning and every evening. According to her main nurse, Brigid Foley, she was a sweet lady, but had a strong character. On her 110th birthday in 2013, she received a telegram from the Queen. Gwendoline Bertha Phillips died in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom on July 24, 2014, at the age of 111 years, 7 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living person in Wales.
