Biography
Germaine Litwinski-Kauffmann was born as Germaine Kauffmann in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg on 4 March 1908. Her parents were Remy and Elise (née Guill) Kauffmann. She spent the vast majority of her youth in Offenbach am Main, Hesse, Germany. She had several jobs, including a secretary and a governess in Brussels, Belgium, a freelance translator back in Luxembourg for many years, and a teacher at Count Guy La Grelle.
In 1982, aged 74, Germaine married lawyer Roland Litwinski, who passed away seven years later in 1989. Germaine lived alone after his death (with support of her nieces) up until she was 103, when she broke her hip, and moved into a nursing home in Schifflange, Luxembourg on 3 August 2011.
Aside from being wheelchair-bound, Litwinski-Kauffmann was reported to be in good health as of her 105th birthday. On 18 July 2016, when she was 108, she became the oldest known living person in Luxembourg after the passing of Barbara Schiltz-Jung. As of her 110th birthday, she had a 99-year-old brother. On her 110th birthday, she was visited by Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg and the Mayor of Schifflange, Paul Weimerskirch.
Litwinski-Kauffmann became the first female (and second overall) supercentenarian from Luxembourg on 4 March 2018. Eleven days later, she became the oldest person in the history of Luxembourg.
Germaine Litwinski-Kauffmann died in Schifflange, Luxembourg on 17 January 2019 at the age of 110 years, 319 days.
