Biography
Elvira Azkarate Etxebarria was born in the Solokoetxe neighborhood of Bilbao, Biscay, Spain on 29 March 1903. She grew up on a farm, immersed in a strongly Basque environment, and as such preferred Basque as her main language. In her early 20s, she met Jesús Bilbao, a sailor from Sopelana, and got married after six months of courtship, aged 24. The couple would have three children, Karmele, Josu and Luis Javier. During the Spanish Civil War, she narrowly escaped death when a bomb landed nearby.
She was married for around 67 years, before her husband’s death in 1994, at the age of 94. At the age of 108, she had no health problems and was one of the few residents at her nursing home who didn’t take any medication, although she could no longer walk.
Elvira Azkarate Etxebarria died in Leioa, Biscay, Spain on 21 October 2013, at the age of 110 years, 206 days.
