Her parents were Emanuel Alfred Roberts, a slave who was emancipated in 1865 at the age of 12, and Moriah Josephine Washington. She grew up on a farm in Alum Creek, Texas, USA. She had 12 siblings. Amanda married C.L. Jones, Sr. The couple had 10 children, including Eloise Baker (aged 75), Ruth Jones (aged 73) and Joyce Jones (aged 68). She had 33 grandchildren, including Brenda Baker (aged 44). C.L. Jones died in 1990. Amanda had been a housewife for 72 years. For well over ten years she worked as a maid for $20 a month.

As supercentenarian, she cast her vote for Barack Obama in the 2008 US presidental elections, being one of the oldest voters in that election..
In the light of the current knowledge, Amanda Jones was the second-oldest living person in the state of Texas behind Eunice Sanborn (1896-2011).
