Virgilio Dávalos Rey, the oldest living person in Paraguay, dies at 111

The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is sadden to reported that Mr. Virgilio Dávalos Rey, the oldest living man and theoldest living person in Paraguay, sadly passed away in Coronel Oviedo, Caaguazu Department on 28 February 2026 at the final age of 111 years and 143 days.

Virgilio Dávalos Rey was born in Placido, Coronel Oviedo, Caaguazu Department, Paraguay, on 8 October 1914. He’s one of the survivors in the Chaco War (1932–1935). He married Teresa López de Dávalos, with whom he had six daughters: Tomasa, Nimia, Francisca, Apolonia, Dominga, and Sara. In October 2014, he celebrated his 100th birthday and became a centenarian.

On 22 July 2022, following the death of 109-year-old Basilio Gonzalez Benitez of Itapua Department, he became the oldest known living man and person in Paraguay.

On 8 October 2024, he celebrated his 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian.

In the afternoon on 24 February 2026, Virgilio Davalos Rey had been admitted to the hospital located in Coronel Oviedo, Caaguazu Department, Paraguay, after experiencing respiratory complications. He remained hospitalized for five days, but his condition worsened over the course of the day until his death was confirmed at noon on 28 February 2026, at the age of 111 years and 143 days, surrounded by his closest family members. His burial was scheduled on the next day at 9:00 AM in the Coronel Oviedo cemetery, where he requested to rest next to his wife, rejecting the sector reserved for ex-combatants in the local cemetery.

Following his death, then 110-year-old Canuto González Britos (born 19 January 1916) of Guaira Department, who is also the survivor in the Chaco War, became the oldest living man and person in Paraguay.
