Helen Doan, Canada’s oldest living person, dies at 112
Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report news that Mrs. Helen McKinnon Doan, the oldest living person in Canada, sadly died in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on 18 April 2024 at the age of 112 years, 213 days.
Helen Doan was born in Coleman, Ontario, Canada on 18 September 1911. At the age of 12, she moved to Toronto with her family.
In 1935, she married Harold Alfred Doan, with whom she had two children, Helen and Harry. She worked as a bookkeeper and an office manager until her retirement in 1976. Her husband died after 63 years of marriage.
In September 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday becoming a supercentenarian.
On 19 September 2022, following the death of 111-year-old Dora Skeen, she became the oldest living person in the province of Ontario.
Her age was verified by Oliver Trim and Waclaw Jan Kroczek, and validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 25 October 2023.
On 30 January 2024, following the death of 113-year-old Mabel Mah of British Columbia, she became the oldest living person in Canada.
After her death, the new oldest living person in Canada is 112-year-old Gertruda Gorecka (born 12 November 1911) of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
